Background: Adolescents must understand the importance of using social media responsibly, as they spend significant time on smartphones for academic and other purposes. However, when students fail to regulate their use of these platforms, it can lead to internet addiction, negatively impacting their physical, psychological, and social health.
Purpose: This study aims to explore the relationship between social media usage and alexithymia. Design: The study involved a review of correlational research.
Findings: The review revealed a strong positive correlation between social media addiction and alexithymia, indicating that excessive social media use is closely linked to difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions.
Implications: These findings can inform psychologists and healthcare professionals in developing effective prevention and intervention strategies. Adolescents who misuse social media can benefit from counselling and guidance to build healthier habits and coping mechanisms.
Recommendations: Educational curricula should incorporate information about the risks and contributing factors of social media addiction, as well as practical strategies to mitigate its adverse effects on physical, psychological, and social well-being.
Conclusion: In summary, social media addiction, along with depression and stress, is strongly associated with increased levels of alexithymia, highlighting the need for comprehensive approaches to address this issue among adolescents.
